A 70-year-old Japanese climber scaled Mt. Qomolangma on Wednesday, making him the oldest person in the world to achieve the feat, Nepal's English newspaper, The Himalayan Times, reported on Thursday.

According to the paper, a five-member team including Takao Arayama, who is aged 70 years reached the summit of the 8,848-meter mountain on Wednesday morning, the organizer, Tokyo-based Adventure Guides said.

Arayama was just three days older than the Japanese man whose record he surpassed, Yuichiro Miura, a professional skier who made it to the top of Mt. Qomolangma in May 2003.

Arayama, a corporate management consultant from Kamakura, south of Tokyo, started climbing mountains in his 40s and has also scaled 6,194-meter Mt. McKinley -- the highest peak in North America.

According to Nepali Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, four Europeans, four Nepali citizens and an Asian have successfully scaled the World's highest peak Mt. Qomolangma on Wednesday.
