Vietnam, Cambodia to cooperate on anti-human trafficking
font size

Vietnam and Cambodia will implement a campaign on combating trafficking of children and women across their borders, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Friday.

As part of the campaign, scheduled to begin in July, and under a cooperation agreement on eliminating human trafficking and helping victims signed by the two countries last October, Vietnam will draw up a list of suspects and rings involved in trafficking of children and women from Vietnam to Cambodia.

On its part, Cambodia will define key areas, suspects and rings engaged in human trade, according to the campaign announced at a conference on Vietnam-Cambodia border cooperation on anti-human trafficking closing in Vietnam's southern Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday.

The two countries will also strengthen their cooperation on sharing information, and extraditing criminals involved in human trafficking.

At least 4,460 Vietnamese women and children have been trafficked in Vietnam and to foreign countries since 1991, Nguyen Manh Te, deputy director of the Criminal Investigation Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security said at a recent national seminar, noting that over 3,800 of them have been trafficked to foreign countries, mainly for prostitution, forced marriage or hard labor.

Many Vietnamese women and children from the southern Mekong Delta have been trafficked to neighbor countries, especially Cambodia, to work as prostitutes or slaves, Te said.
