Apa Sherpa has made history by successfully conquering the world's highest peak Mt. Qomolangma for the 16th time Friday morning, breaking his own record.
Apa reached the top of Mt. Qomolangma at around 11 am local time (0515 GMT), Ang Tshering Sherpa, president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association and managing director of Asian Trekking, the organizers of the expedition, told reporters on Friday.
Apa conquered the peak as a Sirdar (head guide) of the American expedition group "Team No Limit" that also included American climber Kim, along with high altitude climbers Ang Pasang Sherpa and Pasang Temba.
A Sirdar of the team, Apa need not have climbed the peak and could have instead arranged everything from the Base Camp.
"However, he decided to scale Mt. Qomolangma yet again, this urge seems to run in his blood," Ang Tshering said.
Apa's first successful ascent of Mt. Qomolangma was on May 10, 1990 and he set foot atop the summit twice in 1992. He has been climbing the world's highest peak regularly since 1990.
Rajendra Pandey at the Mountaineering department of the tourism ministry, who spoke to the liaison officer stationed at the Base Camp, confirmed that Apa had climbed the peak.
