FIFA shelves sanction on Nigeria
font size

An extraordinary congress of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) has been slated for July 18 in the Nigerian capital Abuja as part of an agreement to end the ongoing impasse at the football house.

FIFA Secretary Urs Linsi said in a communique at the end of a reconciliatory meeting between the warring parties in Abuja on Wednesday that the congress would be held in full compliance with the statutes of the association.

"The congress will be held in full compliance with the FA statutes, " Linsi said, adding that observers from both CAF and FIFA would supervise the event.

He said the main agenda of the congress would be on the harmonization of the football family to heal the wound of the past.

Linsi said the congress would also decide on whether to hold fresh election or allow the Galadima led board to complete its tenure.

He said the meeting also resolved that both parties should recognize the elected board as rightful representatives of the NFA, pending the next elective congress.

Linsi said it was agreed that the NFA members would be allowed immediate access into their offices at the Glass House by the government, which should also resume its support to the association.

He said the football stakeholders also agreed to withdraw their petition against the elected board from the Court of Arbitration in Sports (CAS).

The meeting also urged Nigerian Federal Minister of Sports Saidu Sambawa to intervene at the presidency to ensure the abolition of the decree 101, which had impeded the growth of soccer in the country.

He said by the development Nigeria would no longer be discussed at the FIFA executive meeting in Germany in June.
