Egypt to host Abbas-Olmert summit: report
font size

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will host a Palestinian-Israeli summit on Monday in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, the Egyptian Gazette reported on Sunday.

The summit will be attended by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who has just concluded his visit to the United States.

The daily said that the summit comes within the framework of Egypt's continuous diplomatic efforts to help resume the stalled peace talks between the Palestinians and Israel.

Mubarak revealed on May 22 that he was planning to meet with Olmert in Sharm el-Sheikh, where he hosted an international conference at that time.

On the sidelines of the gathering, Abbas held a 40-minute closed-door meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres.

The Abbas-Livni meeting was the first high-level encounter between senior Palestinian and Israeli officials after Hamas won the Jan. 25 parliamentary election.

Egypt has long played a mediating role between the Palestinians and Israel.
