"X-Men: The Last Stand," the third installment in the comic book-turned-movie saga, raked in 103.1 million dollars over the weekend, the fourth biggest opening in North American box office history and the best Memorial Day weekend debut ever.

If including estimates for Monday, the Memorial Day, the film has brought in about 120.1 million dollars, according to estimates by Los Angeles-based box office tracker Exhibitor Relations on Monday.

The movie, based on the Marvel Entertainment comic book series about a band of mutants struggling in a human world, cracked the " The Da Vinci Code," which came in second place. "The Code" brought in 34 million dollars this weekend, or estimated 43 million dollars including Monday.

And "X-Men" became the top-grossing movie of the year, a honor earlier held by "The Code" for one week with its 77-million-dollar take last weekend.

The movie with the best ever commercial opening weekend was 2002's "Spider-Man," which debuted with 114.8 million dollars. " Star Wars: Episode III" opened in May 2005 with 108.4 million dollars and "Shrek 2" opened in May 2004 with 108 million dollars.

In third place of this weekend's box office charts was animated comedy "Over the Hedge," with 35.3 million dollars, and in fourth was Mission Impossible III with 8.6 million dollars. "Poseidon" the shipwreck remake came in fifth place with 5.5 million dollars.

Powered by "X-Men" and "The Da Vinci Code," this will be the second biggest Memorial Day weekend at the box office, with the top 12 films grossing estimated 228.6 million dollars over the four-day period.

The record was set in 2004, when the top 12 films grossed 238. 77 million dollars from Friday through Monday.
