Hungary welcomes U.S. move to open talks with Iran

The Hungarian government welcomed the U.S. offer to open talks with Iran over its nuclear capability, believing the move could shift negotiations from their current standstill, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Viktor Polgar on Thursday.

However, "Iran must completely and transparently suspend its uranium enrichment," he added.

The Hungarian government is in agreement with Javier Solana, the European Union's foreign policy chief, that the U.S. willingness to strengthen direct negotiations was a positive sign, Polgar said.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced on Wednesday that the U.S. administration was willing to break the 27-year freeze in diplomacy if Iran pledged to stop its uranium enrichment program and allow intrusive inspections of its nuclear facilities.
