font size

Fiji's newly elected 71 MPs have been sworn in Monday morning.

According to The Fijilive, a local news service, also sworn in are 23 Senators.

Fiji's parliament is composed of elected MPs and Senators that include the nominees from the Great Council of Chiefs, Rotuma Island Council and the Prime Minister.

MPs will appoint a new Speaker who under Fiji's 1997 Constitution comes from outside parliament.

The ruling SDL (Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua) party (Fiji United Party) has selected one of its MPs as the new Deputy Speaker.

The president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, will open a new session of parliament Tuesday when he addresses a joint sitting of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Fiji held general election last month and Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase's SDL party won it and formed the multi-party cabinet two weeks ago.
