Iranian FM promises agreement if Tehran's nuclear demands respected
font size

Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Monday that his country could come to an agreement with the international community if Tehran's nuclear demands were respected.

Mottaki made the promise in Tehran's Mehrabad International Airport when he was waiting for the arrival of European Union's foreign policy chief Javier Solana, who would bring Tehran a new proposal passed by the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, plus Germany.

"If they can consider Iran's legal nuclear demands, I think we could have an reasonable agreement with them," Mottaki told reporters.

Mottaki also disclosed that Solana will meet with Iran's top nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani on Tuesday and present the proposal to him, adding that "Iran will study the proposal and give our reply to them."

Solana is expected to arrive in Tehran on Monday night to present Iran a new proposal backed by the six world powers, which agreed a new package last Thursday to offer Iran new talks while insisting that Iran first suspend uranium enrichment.

The two-part package contains both incentives to encourage Iran to cooperate, and the warning of punishment by the UN Security Council if Tehran does not comply.
