Cholera claims over 1,600 lives in Angola

The World Health Organization (WHO) said here on Monday, a cholera outbreak in Angola in mid-February has claimed more than 1,600 lives from more than 42,000 cumulative cases.

In its latest update on the epidemic that has infected 42,562 people in 14 of Angola's 18 provinces, the WHO said that 218 new cases of the disease and five deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours.

The province of Luanda, where cholera erupted in slum districts of the capital on February 13, continues to bear the brunt of the epidemic and 287 fatalities have occurred from over 21,865 cases.
