As the end of the season comes in a couple of weeks, who's going to win the "coach of the year " award.
We knew that Gregg Popovich and Phil Jackson, each of them has just one "coach of the year " trophy to his name, and that's more of the result of what the award is about, usually goes to a team with nice expect to do well, and the coach has really exceeds that expectations. With that in mind, here are a few names that I think should be considered for the award.
First and foremost, Mike Fratello. Taking over the Grizzlies last year, so much turn over on that roster over the summer, and then the game of Stoudamire injury in mid-season, he looses his point guard, and yet, there the grizzle is having a terrific season, possibly in that sixth spot in the west and they got a chance to do some damage in the playoffs.
Avery Johnson, with Dallas. Comes in a year ago, late in a year and out, this is his first season with his full training camp under himself. I think the reason he should be considered despite the fact that the team has great record is , he has transformed that team into a pretty solid defensive club, that's not easy to do, to change a team's identity.
How about the other guy in LA , not Phil Jackson but Mike Dunleavy, we talk about his exceeding expectations. He has got the clippers in 41-28, really in solid play-off position. Clippers, this might be their best team ever, Dunleavy has done a terrific job. This is a fun team to watch, they share the ball and are very good defensively as well.
Mike D'Antoni in Phoenix should be the top candidate to this year's award. Because you look at the Amare Stoudemire injury, the trade of Joe Johnson, the trade of Quentin Richardson. Phoenix was expected to manage maybe a little bit above 500-Hundred. Somehow he has gotten that club to dominate the Pacific Division, looks like they are going to run away with that No.2 seed in the West, they are leading NBA in scoring again, after loosing all that fire power, obviously the Steve Nash-D'Antoni connection are very strong one. He's got that team play in a very high level. In my mind, this is Mike D'Antoni's award again the second year in a row.
