Two Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots ejected safely when their MiG-29 aircraft crashed into the sea off India's west coast Thursday, an IAF spokesman said.

The aircraft, a trainer version of the combat jet, went down at 12:10 p.m., 30 km north of the Jamnagar airbase in Gujarat, west India. It had taken off earlier from Bhuj.

"The pilots ejected safely over the sea and were rescued. No individual was injured/killed as a result of the air crash. An inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of the accident, " Indo-Asian News Service quoted the spokesman as saying.

On Tuesday, the IAF had called a press conference to announce its lowest ever accident rate - of 0.44 percent in every 10,000 flying hours - in four decades.
