China has performed 85,000 organ transplants So far, second only to the US. China is capable of conducting all kinds of organ transplants as foreign countries do, said Chen Shi, chairman of the Organ Transplant Society of the Chinese Medical Association.
Chen made the remark at the news brief of the Second China Organ Transplant Recipients Sports Meeting.
According to Chen, China began organ transplants since 1960's and became capable of performing heart, liver, lung, kidney, kidney-pancreas, liver-kidney, heart-lung transplants in 1990's.
More than 10,000 organ transplants were performed in China each year and last year alone, a record-high 12,000 transplant operations were carried out.
In recent years, some 74,000 kidney transplants have been carried out, the largest number among all organ transplants, patients could live up to 28 years. Some 10,000 liver transplants and 400 heart transplants have been performed; the longest-surviving patients have lived for 12 and 14 years respectively.
