Syria stressed on Tuesday the necessity to continue the Palestinian national dialogue in the interest of the Palestinian people, the official SANA news agency reported.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem made the remarks in a meeting with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud al-Zahar who arrived here Monday evening on a two-day visit.
Zahar told reporters after the meeting that the two sides discussed bilateral relations and the current situation on the Palestinian arena.
He hailed Syria's support to the Palestinian people's legitimate cause and its efforts to enhance the Palestinian national unity.
Zahar warned a plot to fuel civil sedition among the Palestinians while holding the U.S. and Israel responsible for the plight of the Palestinian people.
The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) took power following its surprising victory over long-dominant Fatah in the Jan. 25 parliamentary elections.
But the political disagreement between the two main rival factions resulted in increasing armed clashes and prompted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to call a referendum on a statehood plan which implies recognition of Israel on July 26 after a national dialogue failed to reach agreement.
