Indonesia would host the 2nd International Islamic Scholars Conference in Jakarta from June 20 to 22 to discuss common challenges to be faced by Islamic followers in the future, Foreign Ministry announced here on Friday.
Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi, Prince Ghazi Bin Muhammad representing Jordanian King and other prominent representatives would participate in the conference, said spokesman of the ministry Desra Percaya.
Badawi would be among the keynote speakers in the conference, which would be opened by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, said Desra
"This morning, confirmation of participation rises to 115 people from 153 countries," he said, adding that there were still 134 people from Indonesia to attend the conference.
The participants would discuss various global challenges being faced and to be faced by Islamic followers, including the efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals , the attempt to strengthen the religious values in communities, as well as the development of economy and education for Islamic believers, said Desra.
In February 2004, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry and the country's biggest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulemas launched the first Islamic Scholars' Conference.
Some 87 percent of Indonesia's 240 million population is Muslim, most of them moderate, making the country the world's most populous Muslim country.
