Disney and Pixar's animated comedy "Cars" held on to the top spot at box office in North America over the weekend with an estimated 31.2 million dollars, studio estimates showed Sunday.
"Cars," Pixar's first film after its acquisition by Disney earlier this year, beat all the new movies and raised its 10-day total to 114.5 million dollars,
Paramount's wrestling comedy "Nacho Libre" bowed with 27.5 million dollars to land in the No. 2 spot in its first weekend, while Universal's racing-themed "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," opened with 24.1 million at the third place.
Also bowing strong was Warner Bros.' Keanu Reeves-Sandra Bullock romantic drama "The Lake House," which took in 13.7 million dollars for the No. 4 position.
Rounding out the top five was Universal's "The Break-Up" with 9. 5 million dollars in its third weekend. The Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy has so far taken some 91.9 million dollars.
The weekend's another new release was 20th Century Fox's " Garfield: A ale of Two Kitties," which bowed in the sixth place with a relatively weak 7.2 million dollars.
The top 12 movies in North America took in 139.1 million dollar over the weekend, up 7 percent from the same period last year. It represented the fifth up weekend for Hollywood's overall business.
