Russia is developing new systems of strategic arms capable of piercing any missile defense shield, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said on Tuesday.
"We're focusing on promising systems of high-precision strategic armaments and maneuverable blocks of weapons with an unpredictable trajectory that will overcome any antiballistic missile defense shields," Ivanov said at a session of the Security Council, Russia's top advisory body, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.
Ivanov, who is also deputy prime minister, said the condition of Russia's nuclear arsenal will remain for a long time "the most decisive factor determining the level of this country's defense capability" and one priority is to equip the nuclear triad with the newest systems, specifically the silo-based Topol-M and sea-based Bulava missiles.
Russia last year deployed a number of Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missile systems and test-launched the sea-based Bulava missiles.
The Defense Ministry is currently designing a multi-functional orbital satellite grouping with the aim of ensuring a strategic deterrent and higher quality national security, the defense chief said.
