87 Vietnamese soldier remains unearthed

Vietnam discovered 87 remains of Vietnamese soldiers in mass graves, who were captured and killed by U.S. servicemen and local soldiers of the U.S.-backed South Vietnamese government in the Vietnam War, local newspaper Pioneer reported Wednesday.

The Vietnamese military headquarters of central highlands Gia Lai province found the remains in the province's Pleiku city on June 20. The mass graves were located in a prisoner of war camp established by the U.S. servicemen and soldiers of the U.S.-backed South Vietnamese government to torture and kill Vietnamese liberation soldiers they captured during their raids in the central highlands region before 1975.

Many remains had either dozens of 10-cm nails in the skull, arm and leg joints, or many bullets in the skull and the belly, said the newspaper. The military headquarters is still searching for other remains.
