Today, we watched the Netherlands-Argentina matchup. Clearly not the feast everyone expected, but a good appetizer for the days to come.
Though a 0-0 draw in the end, Argentina never lose control of this game other than the last five minutes. The result is quite flattering for the Dutch as they could have been down two or three goals. What Argentina needs to bring in is just that little extra will to win.
One of the reasons why this game ends up with a nil-nil draw is that it will not make a big difference as to what position they play in, they've already secured that second round spots of their own. Actually, both teams rest several key players, the Dutch sat five and Argentines four, restoring enough energy for the England or Germany duel in the quarterfinals.
Despite the lifeless play, the 18-year-old Argentinian Messi who made his debut as a World Cup rookie performed masterfully in this game. He set up chances for teammates, tested the inexperienced Dutch defense and showed a technical prowess that few players have. I think his presence will make Argentina an overwhelming challenger for the Jules Rimet Cup.
Actually I think I saw a Champion play in Frankfurt today. Can't wait to watch the second round matchup.
