The Colombian army on Monday seized at least one ton of explosives hidden by the rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in the jungle of southern Colombian department Putumayo.

According to Marcolino Tamayo of the army's 27th Brigade, the seizure was in Orito, close to the Ecuador border.

"There are 64 boxes, with around 14 kg of explosives in each one, or around one ton of explosives," he said, adding that the FARC has been using explosives to destroy oil well facilities in the region.

He did not say if there had been fighting or arrests in the region.

Putumayo is the focus of the so-called Plan Patriota (Patriot Plan), an ambitious offensive targeting the FARC, which began three years ago.
