A suspected militant told Indonesian court Tuesday he never recruited suicide bombers to launch attacks in Bali last October, a charge that led him to police detention.
Subur Sugiarto, alias Abu Isa, 35, was testifying in the Denpasar District Court in Bali during the terror trial of Anif Solchanudin, 24, a key suspect in the triple suicide bombings that killed 23 people.
"Anif himself came to me to become a martyr, I never invited him for that," Abu Isa said of the defendant in response to questions from the judge panel.
Abu Isa said he was not aware of the bombing plot in Bali on Oct. 1, 2005.
"I don't know anything about that. All I know is that Anif agreed to become a martyr," he said as quoted by the Antara news agency.
Anif was among a number of suspects arrested in a series of raids in Central Java province following the bombings. He is charged with a supporting role in the attacks.
The three suicide bombers have been identified after police found a recorded video of their farewell messages.
Abu Isa said he did not know the three bombers until he read newspaper reports about the attack.
"I knew their names from media," said Abu Isa, one of six detainees in the police headquarters who were flown to Bali for their testimonies.
The attack was the second on the resort island after the October 2002 nightclub bombings that killed 202 people, mostly foreign holidaymakers.
Terror fugitive Noordin Moh Top, who also appeared in the recorded video in balaclava, is believed to be the mastermind of the two attacks.
