Vietnam has new prime minister

The National Assembly (NA) of Vietnam, the country's top legislature, elected Nguyen Tan Dung as new prime minister of Vietnam on Tuesday afternoon.

Most of NA deputies voted for Dung, member of the Political Bureau under the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and Deputy Prime Minister.

On Tuesday afternoon, Dung proposed the NA to relieve some cabinet members of their posts, including two deputy prime ministers, ministers of defense, foreign affairs, finance, transport, culture and information, and education and training, and chief of the Government Inspectorate. The NA will deliberate his proposal on Wednesday.

Dung, born in 1949 in southern Ca Mau province, became deputy prime minister in 1997, and governor of the State Bank of Vietnam in 1998. He has been the member of the Political Bureau since 1996.
