New Vietnamese PM pledges stronger economic development

The Vietnamese government and the whole political system will promote the national strength and accelerate the renovation process for stronger socioeconomic development, newly-elected Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said Tuesday afternoon.

The government will "synchronously build up the socialist- oriented market economy, be active and dynamic in the international economic integration, rapidly develop economic sectors and types of enterprises, mobilize and well use all sources, especially the internal strength to speed up industrialization and modernization," Dung said before the National Assembly after the top legislature elected him prime minister to replace his longtime mentor Phan Van Khai.

The government will take measures to develop the knowledge- based economy in a quick and sustainable manner and other fields, including culture, education, science and technology, Dung said, adding it will also attach importance to major social issues like poverty reduction, healthcare provision, job creation and anti- corruption, helping to bring Vietnam out of the underdeveloped status soon.

The government will focus on accelerating the administrative reform with regard to building up a law-governed state, and a clean and powerful government, and the government will " consistently take synchronously measures to combat corruption, wastefulness and red-tape, considering them its focal work in the coming time," Dung stated.

"Cabinet members will bring into play collective intelligence, highlight individual responsibility," unite, and assist each other for realization of all tasks, he said.

On Tuesday afternoon, 92.08 percent of Vietnamese legislators voted for Dung, deputy prime minister and member of the Political Bureau under the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, for the post of prime minister. Earlier, they approved the resignation of Khai, 73, due to age factor.

Dung, born in 1949 in southern Ca Mau province, holds a bachelor degree on law and another on high-level political theory from the Ho Chi Minh National Political Academy.

When taking the post of permanent deputy prime minister starting in 1997, he was in charge of many important ministries and sectors, including public security, finance, industry and transport.
