Israeli escalation may foil efforts to end abduction crisis: Erekat

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat warned on Monday that diplomatic ways to secure the release of the abducted Israeli soldier might fail if Israel stepped up military operation in the Gaza Strip.

Erekat told reporters that the chance of settling the problem through diplomatic and political means was "decreasing" following destruction of power plant, bridges, government offices and roads in Gaza by Israeli air raids as part of operation Summer Rain started on June 28 to free the kidnapped soldier.

"As the time passes, I feel the road towards ending the crisis (through negotiation) is going to close," he added.

Meanwhile, three Palestinian militant group which is holding the Israeli soldier hostage issued ultimatum Monday, giving Israel until 6 a.m. Tuesday to meet their demands to release Palestinian prisoners or bear consequences.

Israel has so far ruled out making concession to militants demand.
