Bali bombers likely to be executed on prison island

Indonesian Attorney General Abdul Rahman Saleh said Monday the trio Bali bombers in death row are very likely to face execution on the Nusa Kambangan prison island, not in Bali as stated earlier.

"The minister of justice and human rights affairs has issued the permit. The execution will not take place in Bali," Saleh was quoted by the Detikcom news website as saying.

The three -- Ali Ghufron, Imam Samudera and Amrozi -- have been convicted for major roles in the October 2002 nightclub bombings on the resort island that killed 202 people, mostly foreign holidaymakers.

The executions by firing squad have been delayed, pending their last appeal.

Their detention has been transferred to Nusa Kambangan following protest by Bali residents last year demanding their execution, only days after triple suicide bombings rocked the island and killed 23 people.

Saleh said the execution will be carried out on Nusa Kambangan just to make things simpler, because they are now being detained on the island off Central Java province.

"If they refuse to lodge appeal, the (execution) process will continue," he said.
