U.S. stocks opened lower on Wednesday amid global tension over the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s missile tests.

In the early exchanges, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 46.66 to 11,181.36. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 4.69 to 1,275.50 and the Nasdaq composite index was down 16.73 to 2,173.71.

The UN Security Council called emergency talks on Wednesday to discuss a response to the missile launches, said diplomats from France, which chairs the council this month.

The DPRK test-fired at least six missiles earlier on Wednesday, including its long-range Taepodong-2, which failed around one minute after launching, senior U.S. officials said.
