Terrorists plot to blow up New York tunnels: CNN

A man is being held in Lebanon in connection with a plot to blow up tunnels in New York, the CNN Television reported on Friday.

The story was first reported in the Friday edition of The New York Daily News, which said U.S. authorities had discovered a plot to bomb New York's Holland Tunnel and flood the financial district in lower Manhattan.

However, quoting U.S. intelligence sources, CNN said the Holland Tunnel -- the southernmost link between New Jersey and Manhattan -- had not been mentioned by officials as a target in the plot.

A former high-ranking FBI official, Pat D'Amuro, said an FBI-Lebanese investigation "that goes back over a year" first revealed the plan.

He said the man arrested in Lebanon was known as Amir Andalousi and six or seven other people are connected to the case, but none of them live in the United States.

The news came on the first anniversary of the London bombings, in which four suicide bombers targeted the city's transportation system and killed 52 people.

D'Amuro said it was unclear how far along the plot had moved -- whether it was in the talking stages or a more advanced operational phase.

Meanwhile, FBI officials said they had no indication of any imminent threat to the New York transportation system or anywhere else in the United States.
