Lebanon arrests suspect with plot to bomb New York tunnel

Lebanon's Internal Security Forces said Friday that they have arrested a terror suspect who has admitted to be in a plot to carry out a bombing attack in a New York tunnel.

The security authorities said in a statement that the suspect, whose real name is Assem Hammoud, was focused by FBI agents when they monitored internet chat rooms used by Islamic extremists and learned the plot to strike a blow at the New York city's economy by destroying vital transportation networks.

According to the statement, the plot was "a big terrorist operation against metro tunnels in New York city under the Hudson river".

Hammoud has confessed to the authorities that "he was planning to travel to Pakistan for four months training and that the date for the attack was decided to be late in 2006," said the statement.
