Death toll in Mumbai blasts rises above 170

The death toll in the serial blasts in India's financial capital Mumbai Tuesday evening has risen to 170, Indo-Asian News Service said Wednesday.

"At present, the toll is just above 170 and it will go up. Around 464 people have been injured," the news service said quoting Indian State Chief Secretary D.K. Sankaran.

Sankaran said that five investigative teams of the state police 's anti-terrorist force have been sent to various parts of the state to trace the alleged master minds of the seven consecutive blasts that rocked Mumbai Tuesday evening.

Starting at 6.25 p.m. Tuesday, seven or eight bombs exploded in quick succession at or near railway stations on the Western Railway network of Mumbai.
