font size

Afghan and the U.S.-led Coalition forces have killed dozens of militants in the volatile southern provinces of Afghanistan over the past three days, the military said on Saturday.

Over 30 militants were killed in Uruzgan province while 10 others lost their lives in the neighboring Helmand province, according to the Coalition.

"Thirty one of these militants were killed in and around Chora district of Uruzgan province on Friday," U.S.-led military's spokesman Paul Fitzpatrick told Xinhua.

Two more militants were killed in the restive Deh Rawad district while another was killed in Khas Uruzgan district on July 13.

Another 10 insurgents were killed in the neighboring Helmand province on Saturday, according to a press release issued by the military.

"Afghan and Coalition forces conducted offensive operations on several known extremist targets in the Sangin district of Helmand province in the early morning hours today killing 10 enemies,"the press release said.

These are the parts of the ongoing anti-Taliban operation the Mountain Thrust, which has claimed the lives of more than 700 since its launching in mid May.

"We will continue to disrupt and hunt down extremists operating in southern Afghanistan," the U.S.-led military said in the press release.

Taliban-linked insurgency has claimed the lives of more than 1, 000 people since January this year in the post-Taliban nation.
