Afghan, U.S. military raid Taliban commander's hideout
font size

Afghan and the U.S.-led Coalition forces attacked the hideout of a Taliban key commander in the Sangin district of southern Helmand province on Sunday, a statement of the U.S. military said Monday.

However, it did not say if the target was eliminated.

"The extremist's location was positively determined through intelligence assets before the compound was attacked with joint fires. The building, he was identified to be in, was destroyed and his name will be withheld for security reasons until confirmation of his death," the statement added.

Helmand, which is famous for poppy cultivation has been the scene of increasing militancy since last year.

Three Afghan soldiers were killed and three others sustained injuries as a roadside bomb went off in the neighboring Greshk district Monday morning.

More than 1,000 people, mostly Taliban militants have been killed since beginning this year in the post-Taliban country.
