Spanish PM condemns killing of innocents in Middle East
font size

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero on Wednesday again condemned Israel's use of "abusive force" in killing innocent people in the Middle East, warning that those who were silent now might regret it tomorrow.

Israeli armed forces attacked Beirut, the capital of neighboring Lebanon, destroying the airport and blockading Lebanese ports after Hezbollah guerrillas seized two Israeli soldiers. The air raids in Lebanon in the past eight days have killed nearly 300 people.

"We have to condemn the kidnappings and we must also demand that no-one use abusive levels of force in self-defense," Zapatero told the International Festival of Young Socialists, which began on Tuesday in the Spanish city of Alicante.

While all states had the right to defend themselves against violence, terror and fanaticism, one must not forget that above all, it was right to protect innocent human beings, the prime minister added.
