Spain pledges 2.5 mln dollars in humanitarian aid to Lebanon
font size

The Spanish government announced on Friday it would donate 2 million euros (2.5 million U.S. dollars) in humanitarian aid to Lebanon, which has now suffered 10 days of air bombardment by neighboring Israel.

Deputy Prime Minister Teresa Fernandez de la Vega told reporters that Spain condemns the violence of the Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah and the Palestinian armed group of Hamas, urging both groups to immediately end the armed attacks on Israel.

She also urged Israel to respond in proportion.

"We condemn the generalized use of force by Israel, which has caused hundreds of deaths and serious infrastructure losses," she said.

Israel has been pounding Lebanon since July 12 when Hezbollah fighters killed eight Israeli soldiers and kidnapped two others in a cross-border attack. At least 345 Lebanese, most of them civilians, have been killed in Israeli airstrikes.

Fernandez de la Vega also said Spain would work with its EU colleagues to help end the hostilities between Israel and Lebanon, adding that the Spanish aid would be sent via a humanitarian corridor.
