The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) will soon hold a plenary session to hear a report on the work of the Political Bureau and discuss the issue of building a harmonious socialist society.
The Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Monday passed the resolution to hold the Sixth Plenary Session of the Sixteenth CPC Central Committee.
General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Hu Jintao chaired Monday's meeting.
"Our country now enjoys a harmonious society in general, but there do exist quite a few contradictions and problems that have affected the social harmony," a press release of the meeting said.
Participants of the meeting urged all the Party members to maintain cool-headed and be prepared for any possible danger in times of safety, it said.
In 2004, the Fourth Plenary Session of the Sixteenth CPC Central Committee closed with a decision to build a harmonious society of socialism in China.
Observers said the decision could be seen as the ruling Party's efforts to try to ease mounting tensions over the gap between the urban rich who have benefited most from two decades of economic reform and China's vast, poor majority, living mostly in the countryside.
The decision demanded the issue of building a harmonious society be placed at an important position by stimulating social vitality, pushing forward social justice and fairness, enhancing the sense of law and the sense of integrity in the whole society, and safeguarding social stability and unity.
"To build a harmonious society, we have to be more capable of managing social affairs, coordinating different interests and dealing with contradictions among the people," Hu Jintao once told top Party officials.
He asked officials to study social issues such as urban-rural structure, population distribution, employment structure, and changes in the structure of social organizations.
Over the past two years, the government initiated programs to boost farmers' income, spent more on rural health care and education, and improved justice system in the countryside.
But the challenges remained. "The country is still facing some prominent contradictions like an excessive fast growth of investment, an excessive consumption of energy, and an increase of pressure on the environment," the press release of Monday's meeting said.
In a high-level symposium on reform of the country's income distribution system held earlier this month, Hu Jintao said that the polices will be tilted to meet the needs of the grass-roots and remote and poverty-stricken areas.
So that "the achievements of China's economic reform could benefit everyone," Hu said.
On Monday, the president also called for more macroeconomic efforts to control the sizzling economy and trickle the benefits of economic boom to the poor.
Hu insisted the fixed asset investment should be reined in, after authority announced that China's economic growth soared to 11.3 percent in the second quarter, its highest in a decade.
Meanwhile, the Party has intensified its fight against corruption which caused dissatisfaction among the public and threaten social stability in a harmonious society.
On a grand rally marking the 85th founding anniversary of the Party, Hu called on over 70 million Party members to fully realize the importance of anti-corruption and never slacken the fight against corruption even for a second.
A couple of high-ranking officials were sacked recently for involvement in corruption, including former vice mayor of Beijing and a former deputy chief of the navy.
