HIV/AIDS prevalence rate continues to drop in Zimbabwe
font size

HIV/AIDS prevalence rate continued to decline to 21 percent this year in Zimbabwe as more and more people changed their sexual behavior, Zimbabwean Health and Child Welfare Minister David Parirenyatwa has said.

At a recent technological conference in Bulawayo, the second largest city of Zimbabwe, Parirenyatwa said his country had seen a remarkable decline in the prevalence rate from 31 percent in 1999 to 21 percent this year.

The HIV/AIDS pandemic was putting a strain on the country's health sector, said Parirenyatwa, adding that although it was pleasing to note that the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate was declining, there was still a lot to do to ensure it to fall to a single digit.

He urged researchers to explore the use of traditional medicines for the treatment of HIV/AIDS-related illnesses and improve the effectiveness of anti-retrovirals.

Over 1.5 million people in Zimbabwe have been infected by the HIV/AIDS. The disease kills over 2,000 people in the country every week.

The Zimbabwean government has taken several intervention measures, including the introduction of national fund to assist people infected and affected by the pandemic.
