The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency of Nigeria (NDLEA) in Lagos destroyed 14.2 tons of cocaine seized at Lagos's Tin Can Island Port last month, the official News Agency of Nigeria reported on Tuesday.
NDLEA Chairman Ahmadu Giade was quoted as saying that the consignment was the single largest drug seizure in Africa, restating the commitment of the government to combat drug trafficking in the country.
He said the street value of the drug consignment shipped from Peru and concealed among bags of white cement was more than 50 billion naira (about 385 million U.S. dollars).
He noted the commitment of officers and men of the agency to the drug war, stressing that the agency "is now more determined than ever to give the perpetrators the heinous drug crime."
He explained that the seizure was a result of collaboration between the agency, the American Drug Enforcement Administration, the British Serious Crimes Agency and the South African police.
Speaking on the occasion, Nigerian Federal Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Bayo Ojo also restated the government commitment to combat drug trafficking in the country.
He said the seizure represented a phenomenal leap in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse, stressing"our target is to present a drug agency that is focused, highly motivated, self- driven and result-oriented."
Nigeria, known as a drug producer and transit center in West Africa, has vowed to keep up its fight against drug abuse and trafficking and scored substantial achievement in this regard.
