Indonesia has put the status of volcano Mount. Karangetan in South Sulawesi province on top alert and evacuated over 1,000 people, local volcanologic and district officials said on Friday.
The mountain has frequently spewed lava since several days ago, which flow down to the slope up to about 2 kilometers to southern areas, but no casualty has been reported so far, Kristianto, an volcanologic official, said in a post near the mountain.
"The status has been heightened into the highest alert," he told Xinhua over telephone.
There are about six villages in the southern part of the mountain which possibly may be affected by the lava, he said.
Onwardono Tanalumang, an official of Siau Timur district, where the villages located, said that some 1,000 villagers living near the mountain had taken refuge to safer places.
"At night time, they leave their homes, sleeping in schools, churches and others, and returned home at the day," he told Xinhua.
Mount Karangetan is one of the 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, part of the "Pacific Ring of Fire," a section of fault lines stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and South East Asia.
