A group of Indonesian religious leaders attended the U.N. office in Jakarta Friday demanding the world body to hold a special session to end conflicts in the Middle East.
"We called on the United Nations to hold a special session by either the Security Council or the General Assembly," said Din Syamsuddin, chairman of the country's second largest Muslim group Muhammadiyah.
He made the remarks after a meeting with U.N. representative George Petersen along with 21 clerics of different faiths, including the Indonesian Churches Association.
During the meeting, the group urged the United Nations to play its role as the guardian of world peace without hesitation, he said.
The group strongly condemns Israeli military attacks on Palestinian and Lebanese territories that claimed the lives of hundreds of civilians, he said.
