The future of Roy Jones
font size

Roy Jones was back, at least part of the superman. After winning the unanimous fight against the limited Ajamu, the future of Roy will seem to be very intriguing.

After three consecutive losses, two by knockout, and the long hiatus, the "arguably the greatest pound-for-pound fighter" Roy Jones won the NABO light heavyweight title by thrashing the reigning champ Prince Badi Ajamu in a 12-round one-sided fight yesterday.

Jones regained his ego and composure by outclassed an inferior rival using his former advantages in speed and reflexes. It was sensational, it was inspirational, we all love the way he fights! He did a great job regrouping from the first round frustration. But what I have to say is that he is just the former shell of himself, actually far from his prime, at least at this stage before stepping up once again to the elite class. Let me put that in perspective, Ajamu is a very mediocre fighter, he lacks strength, he lacks speed and wisdom, even his defense is counterfeit. Most importantly, he was unable to apply pressure. I believe that Ajamu is an opponent choicely chosen by Jones only for the purpose of making himself looks good. Yes, he managed it in front the world audience, but he may have deserved an easy fight after having lost his last three in a row.

So who's the next for Jones? Bernard Hopkins, Glen Johnson, or Joe Calzaghe? Jones himself said that he's ready to fight anyone. No matter which one of the threes he picks, the future of Jones will look very interesting.

The second collision between Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones is sure to attract thousands of eyes although it will be an aging fighter vs. a twilight warrior story. I don't think anyone would question that Jones will win the fight. By the time these two fighters meet the second time on the ring, Hopkins will turn 42 and Jones possibly 37. Jones may have the age advantage. Hopkins was once beaten by Jones in a fierce 12-rounds duel though he was just a green fighter both technically and mentally at that time. Jones may have a slight mental edge over his old foe. Plus, Jones had reigned the light heavyweight division for quite a long time, he's cut out for this division and get comfortable fighting in it. On the contrary, Hopkins is a natural middleweight, he made an amazing 20 defenses in this division. There's no way he could move up two weight classes and stay there defending his title against such a horrible opponent as Jones in the twilight of his career.

Jones was knocked out by Glen Johnson. But I think if Johnson fights like he did in the second fight against Tarver, Jones might get his redemption. However, I think Jones should avoid that Johnson fight. Johnson is an average fighter, and yet he has the style that can hold Jones over, always aggressive and pushing onwards. It's unwise for Jones to pick Johnson as his next opponent.

Well, if one were to make adjustments for moving up or going down in weight, the Calzaghe-Jones fight would happen. But I don't think Jones would move down to suit Calzaghe's taste. He won't change his weight anymore, the weight changes from light heavyweight to heavy weight, and again to light heavyweight cost him 3 fatal losses, he won't be tripped by the same stone.

Glory or fall, the future of Roy Jones is still in the mist.
