Haneya calls for discussing future of PNA
font size

Prime Minister Ismail Haneya of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas)-dominated cabinet called on Wednesday for discussing the future of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA).

Haneya made the call during an urgent session of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) held both in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, though many legislators were being held in Israel, including the PLC Speaker Aziz Dwaik.

Haneya urged for discussing PNA future as demands to dissolve the PNA have increased, said media reports, adding some lawmakers supported Haneya's proposals.

Earlier on Wednesday, a Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) spokesman also called for dismantling the PNA owing to Israeli obstacles.

The PLC held the Wednesday session to discuss the recent development in the Palestinian territories and the arrest of Dwaik.

The session was presided over by deputy PLC speaker Ahmed Bahar, with only 78 members out of 132 could attend the meeting, while the others remained at Israeli jails.

In his speech, Haneya told the legislators that Israel targets the national symbols in a bid to cover up its military failure and insult caused against it by the Lebanese and the Palestinian resistance.

He stressed that PLC Speaker Aziz Dwaik's detention in Israeli jail was a dangerous violation.

Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator and a PLC lawmaker representing the Fatah movement led by PNA President Mohammad Abbas, also spoke at the session.

He denounced Israeli attempts to assassinate Prime Minister Haneya with the poisoned parcel, saying it's not a new tactic by Israel to try to assassinate the Palestinian prime minister or to arrest Dwaik.

Israeli has just since 2000 assassinated the late President Yasser Arafat, Erekat said.

PLC member Basam Al Salhi demanded an end to the Palestinian parliament's relationship with Israel, saying that Israel must be charged for war crimes since it has kidnapped Palestinian government representatives and ministers.
