Germany cancels flights to Britain amid terrorist threat
font size

Germany has cancelled nearly all flights from Germany to Britain in the wake of reports early Thursday that British police have foiled a major terrorist plot to blow up British planes destined for the United States.

Lufthansa, the biggest airline in Germany and the second biggest in Europe, cancelled all flights scheduled to depart for Britain before 2 p.m. local time (1300 GMT), the DPA agency in a report.

The move was taken because the security situation in Britain's Heathrow Airport remained unclear, said a spokeswoman for Lufthansa.

Meanwhile, Air Berlin, another major German airline, said most flights to and from Britain had been cancelled and that the most heightened security was imposed for all flights, especially those to and from Britain.

Among the extensive security measures, passengers are advised not to take hand luggage. No liquid medicine and beverage will be allowed to be taken aboard.
