Egypt sends aid to LebanonEgyptian President Hosni Mubarak ordered sending potable water and other relief supplies to Lebanon by sea on Wednesday. The official MENA news agency quoted Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman Alaa al-Hadidi as saying that the shipment showed Egypt's solidarity with Lebanon at this critical stage. The Egyptian ship has left the Mediterranean port Alexandria for Beirut harbor, al-Hadidi said. The shipment came after Mubarak's son Gamal Mubarak led a 70- strong delegation of government ministers and other officials to Beirut on Tuesday to show Egypt's support for Lebanon. Egypt has also airlifted aid several times since the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah guerrillas on July 12 triggered a massive Israeli offensive on Lebanon. Over 1,000 Lebanese, mostly civilians, have been killed and nearly one million population displaced since the conflict began. Source: Xinhua |
