Romania would send more troops to Afghanistan to help stabilize security in the post-Taliban central Asian state, the visiting Romanian President Traian Basescu said Thursday.
"We have a new battalion which was requested by NATO, being prepared to be placed in operation," he told journalists at a joint press conference with President Hamid Karzai here.
It is the third visit of Romanian President to Afghanistan, during which he exchanged views with his Afghan counterpart on boosting bilateral relations and security situation in Afghanistan.
Currently 648 soldiers of the east European state are serving in Afghanistan under the NATO flag to ensure security in the war- ravaged country.
President Basescu also offered his government's readiness to provide training to Afghan army as well as Afghan students to study in his country.
The Romanian leader, who earlier visited his troops in the troubled provinces of Kandahar and Helmand, said that his government would continue to support Afghanistan.
