Japan welcomes UN resolution on Lebanon
font size

Japan said Saturday that it welcomed the UN Security Council's unanimous adoption of a resolution on Mideast peace, which is meant to end more than four weeks of fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

"Japan will continue to call for all parties concerned to immediately accept a cease-fire and agree on a political framework shown in the resolution, and maximize their efforts to restore stability in the region," Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso said in a statement.

The UN Security Council on Friday unanimously adopted a resolution, calling for Israeli troops withdrawal and authorizing an increase of the existing UN force in Lebanon to 15,000 troops to help Lebanese troops take control of south Lebanon as Israel withdraws its forces.
