UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has decided to dispatch to Lebanon and Israel a high-level mission to secure the full implementation of a UN Security Council resolution aimed at ending the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Wednesday.
The mission, which consists of Vijay Nambiar, the secretary- general's special advisor, and Terje Roed-Larsen, will depart on Thursday and are expected to return at some point next week, Dujarric said.
During the trip, the UN officials are expected to meet with the authorities in Lebanon and Israel, but a full program for meetings has yet to be set.
The spokesman added that the mission falls within the secretary- general's responsibility to report back on the implementation of the resolution and to help the parties as outlined in resolution 1701.
The 15-member Security Council adopted resolution 1701 on Friday, calling for the withdrawal of Israeli troops in southern Lebanon in parallel with the deployment of up to 15,000 UN peacekeeping troops and a similarly-sized force of Lebanese troops.
The resolution gives Annan 30 days to come up with proposals on disarming militia groups in Lebanon and resolving various border disputes including the one over Shebaa Farms.
