Paper warns of serious gender imbalance in China

China has serious gender imbalance among babies and children, with girls far outnumbering boys, according to the Report on China's Population and Labor No.7, recently published by the Social Sciences Academic Press.

The report said the imbalance in the ratio of newborns has been on the rise ever since the 1980s; in 1983, there were 108.5 boys born for every 100 girls, and in 1990 there were 111.3 boys for every 100 girls. The figure was as high as 116.9 in 2000 and soared to 121.2 in 2004.
