South African John Robert Oosthuizen finished atop the podium in the men's javelin throw of the IAAF World Junior Championships in Beijing on Saturday.

Oosthuizen, 19, took the title in a championships record of 83.07 meters while Ari Mannio of Finland finished a distant second in 77.26.

"It was a tough competition. I am happy with my consistency of throws," said Oosthuizen, who finished fifth in this year's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

"I am happy with the result. 83 meters? I just don't believe it, " said an excited Oosthuizen.

Roman Avramenko from Ukraine had a personal best result of 76.01, which gave him a bronze medal.

Victor Fatecha missed the podium but still set a new Paraguayan national junior record in 75.64.
