Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi said Monday that Italy was ready to assume command of the UN peacekeeping force in south Lebanon where a week-long ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was fragile.

"I confirmed that Italy was available to command the UN mission" in a phone conversation with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Prodi told reporters in the central Italian city of Grosseto.
