Venezuela seeks Bangladesh support for candidature of UNSC non-permanent membership

Venezuela has sought Bangladesh's support for its candidature for non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council.

The special envoy of the Venezuelan president and minister of state for external affairs, Jenny Figueredo, handed over a letter, addressed to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia with this request, to Bangladeshi Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan at his office Tuesday, according to local news agency UNB.

The Venezuelan envoy said Bangladesh is an active member of the United Nations (UN) and its support for Venezuela in the UN Security Council is very important.

Morshed Khan assured the envoy that Bangladesh would give due consideration to the Venezuelan request.

Khan said Bangladesh and Venezuela are friendly countries and that there is a scope to further develop the bilateral relations.

He requested the special envoy to establish a mission or a consulate in Dhaka for better communication in economic fields for the mutual benefits of the people of the two countries.

Dr Figueredo appreciated Bangladesh's economic progress and expressed the hope that both countries would work together in the days to come.
