Jiang-the history of Chinese family name
font size

The Chinese family name Jiang, literarily meaning river, is the offspring of the Yellow Emperor, the legendary ancestor of the Chinese nation. It originates from the family name Ying, which Chinese legend upholds as the name of the good assistant of the Chinese emperor Da yu, who was famous for his efforts to conquer the flood in ancient China.

According to Xingpu which means family name map in Chinese, Jiang was a nation located in today's Jiangling province in Hubei. Others believe that it was in the Southwest of Zhengyang, Henan province.
